From a late-night SSX3 fit to Shelby and I playing Pokemon Snap, I've been running a lot of test streams not only for technical purposes, but to figure out what folks enjoy watching most when we're out of the tournament season.

I have a lot of fun hosting these streams as I like playing games in a more social fashion and so Im looking to turn these into regularly scheduled events. This is where I need your help because I'd like some input on what you'd be interested in watching. To startthings off, here are the ideas I've currently been kicking around.

Social Gatherings & Tournaments: This is the big obvious one, and from the Thursday Night San Jose gathering to co-ops with iPlayWinner.com, gatherings and tournaments are my top priority when it comes to streaming game footage. Most of the time this boils down to Street Fighter and Tekken, but it's also meant Bomberman and other random games in a group setting.

Jared vs The World: You may have seen this before, where I play Street Fighter IV and ask viewers to send me game invites for everyone to see. It's a lot of fun since and everyone gets to showcase their skills. I want to make this a regular occurrence, though extend its reach beyond just Street Fighter IV. It'd be fun to do this with other competitive multiplayer games.

Endurance Runs: Similar to what my friends at GiantBomb did with Persona 4, this is where we pick a game and then I play it until its completion. When I lift an idea, however, I like to put my own unique twist on it. I was thinking of possibly attempting a multiplayer endurance run featuring Diablo II or even possibly 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, with the viewers filling in the co-op slots.

Retro Nights: I love introducing people to my favorite games, or those they may have missed, so I'm interested in having a night where I run through a favorite classic of mine. This could also turn into something of a challenge night where I push myself to complete a very difficult game.

These are just a few of my ideas, but I'd really love to hear what you guys think since you're most likely one of my viewers.

Mid-Life Crisis II: Crisis Harder

Earlier this week I read two great articles from my journo-pals Gus Mastrapa and Jenn Frank on the subject of aging gamers. Apparently, this is the season for mid-life crisis' because even though I swore I had already gone through it (at the ripe, old age of 22), I've been thinking a lot about how my increasing age effects my ability to play video games. I should probably be more concerned about how aging is going to make my pre-existing back and knee conditions that much worse, but no, I'm instead going to focus on how every breath I take brings me one step closer to the day I can't pass Girls Rock EX in Pop'n Music.

Like Jenn, there are times where I pick up a controller and instead of focusing on the further adventures of Commander Shepard and Master Chief, I'm thinking about how every second I spend sitting on this couch, I could be making babies so my parents don't pass away thinking I'll die alone shortly after them, having never accomplished anything beyond a very respectable score in 1941: Counter Attack.

I'm being dramatic, but at the same time I'm really, really not.

A Few Thoughts on Mass Effect 2

Having avoided most of the pre-release coverage and picking up the game a few days too late (I was too busy putting off my replay of the original to be trusted with the sequel) I've been without much Mass Effect 2 discussion. Even now, having dropped twenty hours of my life into Bioware's latest (and possibly greatest), I live in constant fear of spoilers and that means no message boards.

I'm at that point in the game where every one in my party recognizes that we're on a mission of galactic importance, but it'd be really sweet if we could drop everything and run a personal errand across the universe, so this is as good a time as any to slow down and jot down some of my thoughts. If you're like me and you're in the middle of your first play through, don't worry, I'll keep it spoiler free.

I have an assignment for you readers out there: a simple two-step questionaire for you to spring upon your friends.

First, ask any video game fan who they think the strongest woman in the world is. Chances are they'll respond with Chun-Li, and why not? While Samus Aran may be considered the original "strong female lead" of video games, Chun-Li proved once and for all that women could kick just as much ass as the boys, still be sexy and at the end of the game she didn't even strip down to her underpants to prove it. With her iconic fashion sense and ferocious fighting style, Chun-Li has become a timeless icon for women in gaming.

Now for the second question: would you still respect Chun-Li had she entered a girls-only Street Fighter tournament? Suddenly, the persona of Chun-Li doesn't sound all that fierce or, for lack of a better term, badass. This is what the organizers of the annual EVO Championship Series fighting game tournament (whom I love dearly) are asking the community to do and I for one can't stand the idea one bit.

Advice on Live Streams

I've been creating and hosting live streams of Street Fighter gatherings for a little over a year now and not only have I learned a lot since I first began, but I'm actually still learning little tricks here and there that makes this hobby of mine as fresh as ever. With more and more outlets jumping into the fray of streaming live events, I've become something of a go-to person when it comes to figuring all this stuff out, so I thought today I'd share some of the knowledge that comes from constant streams a year later.

For everything technical regarding what sort of equipment or software you should be using, my good friend Niedel over at iPlayWinner (of which I'm a media consultant) wrote up a great guide that covers all of that. When it comes to hardware, really, just about setup you can come up with will probably net decent results and in software, nothing beats CamTwist, which is a Mac only live editing application. Without it, I have no idea how I'd be able to do a lot of the cooler aspects of my streams.

As for everything else, here's my all-purpose advice for running a live stream.

Mr Jared vs The World Live Stream Test

"Played [Jared Rea] in Street Fighter IV.
First of all, that's not true! Everyone knows that us NorCal players play Street Friendly IV!

Have you ever listened to me open my big mouth on a podcast or a stream and thought to yourself, hey, I bet that Jared kid isn't as good at Street Fighter as he likes to think he is. I'm not picky when it comes to food, I'm always willing to try anything once and when it comes to games, the more unique or out-of-bounds a game is conceptually, the more excited I am to check it out. I also consider myself to be something of an advocate for the role of women in games, whether its celebrating respectable female leads (Beyond Good & Evil's Jade and Mass Effect's Shepard come to mind) or bringing awareness to the second-class nature of playing as a female character in a game, if a game with customizable protagonists even allows for it. So you can imagine the inner turmoil that occurs when something like Bayonetta becomes one of my favorite action titles in recent times.

I'm actually thankful that something as extreme as Bayonetta came into fruition because the game itself is so undeniably provocative that its bringing a lot of interesting discussions on the matter to the table, especially those from Tiff and Leigh. And to be perfectly honest, I can't help but get myself into horribly awkward debates regarding gender politics with my girlfriend, who is soundly disgusted by the world of Bayonetta.

While Leigh Alexander argued on behalf of empowerment by pole dancing and Tiff the opposite, my opinion falls somewhere in the middle as, unlike a lot of games, the fiction and overall design of the game supports a character as ridiculous and yucky as Bayonetta.

Hookin' for Points

I spent the holidays being sick in more ways than one. Not only was I left immobilized by a terrible flu (complete with the now-standard 3AM swine flu freak out), but I also went on an achievement grabbing rampage, digging up games I hadn't played in ages if only to hear that blissful blip and taste the sweetness of s-rank status once again. Needless to say, I was a sick, sick man.

Forcing myself to play Braid and the harder levels of Trials HD (though the latter was immensely satisfying) gave me a lot of time to think about achievements and realize that a lot of my feelings towards them haven't differed much from when they first arrived on the scene back in 2005. When Microsoft first revealed their progress tracking initiative, I remember thinking that they were the perfect way to get the most out of the games we buy and that I'd always strive to get all the achievements for all my games.

Then the Xbox 360 launched and Perfect Dark Zero asked that you get 1,000 kills every way that you could possibly imagine. The most influencing factor in my life in consuming media this year was that it was the first time in nearly seven years that I wasn't a member of the gaming press. This was great because I was free to obsess over only what I chose to, as opposed to what the story or an editor demanded, which of course lent itself to a never-ending spiral of obscure fighting games and other niche bullshit.
